Die viktorianische Ära (1837 bis 1901) wurde von Moralvorstellungen geprägt, die sich auf nahezu jeden Bereich des Sexuallebens auswirkten: Lust in der Ehe, Prostitution, Masturbation, und weibliches Begehren. Hinter der Fassade existierte jedoch eine reiche Untergrundkultur, die in Literatur und Fotografie weibliche Lust, verschiedene Geschlechterrollen und sexuelles Experimentieren sichtbar machte.
LIE BACK AND THINK OF ENGLAND begibt sich auf eine Entdeckungsreise in diese verborgene Welt und beleuchtet die Absurditäten, Doppelmoral und skurrile Eigenheiten des viktorianischen Sexualethos. Historische Texte und Fotografien aus erotischer Literatur, Medizin, Gerichtsakten und Tagebüchern werden zu einer Collage verwoben. Durch Parodie, Satire und meta-theatralischen Mittel blickt die Inszenierung auf den Widerspruch zwischen öffentlichem Anstand und privatem Begehren.

LIE BACK AND THINK OF ENGLAND explores the absurdities of Victorian sexual morality through texts and images drawn from erotica, medicine, law, and personal diaries.
The Victorian era (1837–1901) saw a rising public obsession with chastity, purity and rigid gender roles that ran rampant through all walks of life. Behind this respectable façade, however, a rich underground culture flourished, where female desire, gender fluidity, and sexual experimentation were thrust into the spotlight and celebrated behind closed doors.
LIE BACK AND THINK OF ENGLAND embarks on a journey into this hidden world, shedding light on the absurdities, double standards, and peculiarities of Victorian sexual morality. Through the lens of a disenfranchised young woman of the time and her battle to find fulfillment in a world not designed for her, these themes come together to show how much, and in some ways how little, our society has changed.
